On the last journey, the D-Max justified bakkie ownership when it carried a weekend’s worth of luggage for five adults, and a caboodle of self-catering equipment inside its load-bin. Since our last report, we have rubberised the load-bin as the scratches from loading all manner of things were becoming an eyesore, and it has been to the Mpumalanga province twice on different missions. I’d hoped it would have decreased to below the 9.0 l/100km mark. ![]() The 3.0 l turbodiesel engine feels strong and it’s sticking to its 9.2 l/100km fuel consumption average. On paper, it’s got everything - good pace, great styling and space for the family. Rather it’s a perk that translates into nimbleness everywhere, especially in tight parking spaces. Our D-Max has a wheelbase of 3,125mm, which isn’t too shabby compared to the 3,270mm of the new arrivals, and its narrower than both the new Ford and Volkswagen twins. Now competition has got stiffer with the arrival of the larger, all-new Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok. When our Isuzu D-Max 3.0TD LSE 4x4 initially joined us about nine months ago, it was the second of the anticipated new-generation double-cab bakkies after its Mazda BT-50 technical twin. ![]() ![]() ![]() The show was not full of the non-firearms junk that we see at many shows, but that just left the place even more empty than usual. Quite a few vendors commented that they would not be back for the next show, which won’t be any great loss. Vendors were complaining that no one was buying, and somehow they couldn’t figure out why no one wanted to pay $270 for a Hi-Point Carbine, $1500 for a DSA FAL, or $15 for Gen2 P-Mags, to cite just some of the Bargains available. The days of getting great deals at a gun show are long gone, and I don’t expect show vendors to beat online pricing, but I certainly expect them to at least come close to regular gunshop prices - most items that I knew the prices of were being offered for ABOVE MSRP, which puts them well above local gun shop prices. The only thing I have to disagree with the other reviewers about is that $8 for parking plus $10 admission does NOT add up to $32 - apparently they didn’t bother with the $2 off coupons that are everywhere online AND chose to pay for a two-day ticket (God only knows why). I was able to get a handicapped parking space directly in front of the doors, which will tell anyone who knows the Kentucky Fair Grounds that there were almost no one here. I agree that the show was a waste of time and space - the ONLY good thing to be said for it is that it was the only gun show that I have been to where you could actually walk up and down the aisles looking at the tables without constantly being pushed, shoved, and jostled - mostly because the place was a ghost town. ![]() I wish I could get my money and time back. You are part of the problem in the gun community. Thank you! To the rest, those who were little more than price gouging hacks and especially Mr Woods. ![]() Those there with quality products and some actual professionalism. Or get his head out of his _ss! The few bright spots of this show were a handful of fantastic vendors. And if this is the typical Gun Show that Kenny Woods provides. Honestly the list of disappointments could go on to complete a novel. Pmags sold above the cost found in many box stores. The obvious rust patches could still be seen. ![]() And those that were not were simply painted. Many were drenched in oil to conceal this. Many of the steel or issued AK magazines were riddled with rust. When a new nitrided BCG can be had for little more. $100 for a used worn parkerized bolt carrier. Ammo vendors were routinely asking 3 to 4 dollars more than the same ammo was going for at the local Wal-Mart. So by the time you were 3 rows into the show your anger and disappointment levels were peeking. Precluding any ability to check the action for possible issues and deficiencies. Many of the guns on display had the aforementioned zip tie run through them. A trip down to Academy Sports would yield a new in the box Taurus TCP for $239 that would not require a 2 day sonic bath prior to handling. Possibly some old dead sweaty skin cells to boot. The grip texture loaded with dirt and grime. Yet complained no one was buying anything… I wonder why?!?! Another asked for $250 for a fairly used Taurus 738 TCP, The slide peppered with burnt powder and carbon throughout all the nooks and crannies. In some cases the asking price was above the MSRP for the same gun new! One so called vendor asked for $275 for a noticeably used Hi Point carbine. Whose barrels were scored with copper build up, that exceeded the cost of a new gun that could be readily bought from one of the 5 closest gun stores to this so called gun show. Or was bludgeoned with exorbitant prices for used unkept, unclean guns still caked with carbon and burnt powder. After entry I was in inundated with rows and rows of either junk guns and curios that someone dug out of their basement, attic or barn. Seems Mr Woods support of the the 2nd Amendment is in name only! This sort of idiocy wasn’t even a requirement at the NRA annual meeting that took place just months ago at the same location. Before entry into the show you had to have your carry gun unloaded and zip tied! Regardless if your were a holder of a Kentucky issued or recognized conceal carry permit. I guess promotion and support of the 2nd Amendment is not a priority with Mr Woods. So any promotion of the event or attending vendors through social media from pro-gun/pro second Amendment sites and channels were denied and repeatedly discouraged. Only to find out that no “recording devices” were allowed. What a joke and utter let down! With $20 spent, $8 to park and $12 for admission.
